I am always looking for new and interesting things to do with my subsistence meats. With this Mediterranean Moose Gyro, I definitely hit the jackpot for a delicious and out-of-the-box way to use moose! If you’re looking to combine Alaska’s wild bounty with the flavors of the Mediterranean, this slow-cooked moose meat gyro is the perfect dish. Imagine tender, spiced moose wrapped in warm pita, topped with fresh veggies, pickled red onions and creamy tzatziki. It’s a fusion that’s both adventurous and comforting!
The gyro (pronounced YEE-roh) has roots in Greece but also draws influence from Middle Eastern shawarma and Turkish döner kebab. Traditionally, the gyro features thin slices of meat (usually lamb, beef, or chicken) that are stacked on a vertical rotisserie. The meat is sliced off and tucked into soft pita bread, accompanied by tomatoes, onions, and creamy tzatziki sauce.
In Alaska, moose hunting is both a cultural tradition and a practical way to stock up on healthy, wild meat. Moose hunts often take place in remote areas, and hunters need to be prepared for long days of hiking, stalking, and sometimes even boating to access moose habitat. The result? Lean, flavorful meat that’s perfect for slow cooking. And it makes the perfect meat for an Alaskan Style Gyro.
