When it comes to choosing salmon at the grocery store, the options can be overwhelming. Should you go for the fresh filet or the convenience of canned? And what about wild vs. farmed? Let me break it down.

 

Wild Alaska Salmon: The Superior Choice

 

Wild salmon is often hailed as the healthier option, and for good reason. It’s rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for heart health, brain function, and reducing inflammation. Wild salmon also contains less saturated fat and fewer calories compared to its farmed counterpart.

One of the key benefits of wild salmon is its natural diet. Wild salmon feed on a variety of marine organisms, which gives their flesh a vibrant pink color and a richer flavor. This natural diet also ensures that wild salmon is free from the antibiotics and artificial additives often found in farmed salmon. Just do yourself a favor and don’t buy farmed salmon.

 

Canned Salmon: A Convenient Alternative

 

While fresh filets are prized for their taste and texture, canned salmon offers its own set of benefits. Many of us Alaskans have the opportunity to subsistence fish for salmon. Which means, when we go dip netting, for example, we can catch a certain amount of salmon per head of household, with an additional amount per household member. Sure, we try to process it so we get beautiful filets for freezing. But, we have a limited amount of freezer space, so we also have a lot of it canned by a local processor. Don’t discount canned wild salmon at your grocery store. Canned salmon is a convenient pantry staple that’s shelf-stable and ready to eat at a moment’s notice. It’s also more affordable than fresh salmon, making it a budget-friendly option for families.

 

Despite being canned, this form of salmon retains many of its nutritional benefits. Canned salmon is a great source of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and calcium (from the bones). It’s also a versatile ingredient that can be used in a variety of dishes, from salads to pasta.

 

I’m going to share with you a delicious recipe for Red Hot Blue Cheese Salmon Burgers made with canned salmon. Enjoy!

 

Ingredients
  • 2 cans Wild Alaska Salmon (approximately 16oz)
  • 2 small eggs
  • 1/4 cup panko crumbs
  • 2 tbsp blue cheese crumbles
  • 4 tbsp Franks Red Hot Sauce
  • 1/4 cup cilantro, chopped
  • 1 tbsp garlic, finely chopped
  • 1/8 tsp celery salt
  • 1/8 tsp onion powder
  • 1/8 tsp pepper
  • 4-6 tbsp avocado oil
  • 4 burger buns
  • 1/2 cup mayonaisse
  • Optional toppings: Lettuce, tomato, shredded carrots, pickles, additional blue cheese

Instructions
  1. Combine salmon, eggs, panko, blue cheese, 2 tbsp Franks, cilantro, garlic and spices. Once combined, form into 4 patties. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Combine mayonnaise and 2 tbsp Franks to make a ‘special sauce’.
  3. Gather and prep optional toppings.
  4. To cook salmon burgers, heat approximately 4-6 tbsp avocado oil in large sauté pan.
  5. When the oil is at a medium/high temperature, place all 4 burgers in the oil to start frying. Flip when first side is golden brown. Remove when second side is golden brown.
  6. Place on a cooling rack so excess oil can drain off.
  7. Build the salmon burger to your liking and enjoy!
